Benefits of Rose Essential Oil for the Face
Rose essential oil is especially beneficial for all skin types, particularly dry or sensitive skin. It is highly soothing for irritated or sensitive skin, including conditions such as dermatitis or eczema. Lidia Blosson recommends it particularly for wrinkles, couperose, or asphyxiated skin, as she considers it a potent skin healer and regenerating agent. Maggie Tisserand classifies it as one of the best regenerating essential oils for mature skin, alongside neroli, myrrh, frankincense, and lavender. When used consistently on the face, it significantly improves skin health, giving it radiance and vitality, regenerating cells while you sleep, and soothing sensitivity and irritation.
The rose has a universal image: when we think of it, we immediately associate it with love. In many cultures, it has symbolized both earthly and universal love. Spiritually, the rose represents purity, and its five petals symbolize the number five, which represents man and the microcosm. It is universally associated with the heart, emotions, the spiritual, and the divine.
In Eastern cultures, the lotus has similar symbolic meanings to the rose in Western cultures: representing the spiritual awakening of consciousness through life experiences. The lotus emerges from the muddy waters to bloom in all its beauty, unafraid of the light and energy of the sun. The rose shares this symbolism in the West. After a path of thorns, the rose emerges with strength, beauty, innocence, and delicacy.
The rose is also a gentle antidepressant, like many flowers. The Damask rose absolute is a balancing essential oil that helps our brain relax or activate, depending on what is needed. It is especially helpful for emotional healing during periods of grief or trauma, providing a sense of comfort during transitions and moments of emotional insecurity. It lifts the spirit, relieves melancholy, and alleviates natural depression, stress, and nervous tension. Its beautiful aromatic molecules help calm feelings of insecurity, fear, and lack of self-confidence. It is also highly effective in treating relationship issues, envy, and intolerance, offering comfort and support during crises. It relaxes during moments of anger, frustration, jealousy, or resentment.
A Feminine Essential Oil
The rose essential oil is quintessentially feminine, symbolizing love and purity, with a special affinity for the female urogenital system. It acts as a uterine tonic, easing menstrual pain and discomfort in the days leading up to menstruation. It is also one of the best oils to use during childbirth. The great physician Hippocrates mentioned rose, specifically Damask rose, as a tonic for the female hormonal system. Its relaxing and soothing action relieves frigidity caused by nervous tension. Along with jasmine, the rose represents femininity in the collective unconscious.
Regarding cultivation and production, it takes around five tons of petals to produce just one kilogram of rose essential oil—roughly 5000 kilos of petals. This explains its high price and why it is frequently adulterated and imitated using geranium, rosewood, and palmarosa oils, with geraniol and citronellol being some of its main components. There are approximately 250 varieties of roses grown worldwide, but only 30 of them are aromatic, originating from three main rose species: Rosa gallica, Rosa centifolia, and Rosa damascena, the most aromatic and highly valued in aromatherapy.
